Weirding Way
In these self-portraits, I draw upon ancient myths and legends, exploring the heroic cycle of death and rebirth. I participate in an intimate voyage to the underworld, with its archetypal characters and experiences, and the essential wisdom and insight gained by such encounters. At times confrontational, my collages are composed of both allegorical and literal elements, encompassing and compressing the spectrum of my emotions and personae as inherent to the classical quest for self-knowledge. Issues of the real and the perceived manifest in each iteration of the self, as I juxtapose portraiture with ordinary artifacts to suggest polar states of being. In these acts of simultaneity, I present a range of thought, feeling and identity. The beginning and end of the transformative process takes place in a single moment. In the face of destruction, despair and suffering, I propose through such cathartic release and consolation that a primal growth of the spirit becomes possible.
